Fascinus no. 6

$124.00

Ridiculous? Yes. Historically appropriate? Also yes. This is the sixth installment in an ongoing series, affectionately nicknamed “Spotted Dick.” (To date, we’ve also had Frankenweenie, Blue Balls, and the Beenis. Let it never be said that this is a serious place.)

Phallic tokens, both with and without wings, were a common motif in ancient Rome - in jewelry, in art, and in household objects - believed to ward off the evil eye. For those who’d like to do the reading, Wikipedia has much to offer to start you off on the subject! For those who wouldn’t: just consider this a slightly offbeat installment in the ongoing series of historical objects gone Changeling.

As always, every winged piece is unique! Each one begins by matching a stone to one of my many wing doodles, inspired by insects, fantasy art, and natural shapes. Using my drawings as a template, I sculpt the wings in wax wire, and then build shape and texture with heat! No two are ever quite alike.

White bronze with Dalmatian stone; 3” wingspan. Adjustable cord included.
