This was once a real acorn cap, dropped by a living tree! Now, it is solid bronze, with a striated little green garnet as its new “nut.” The organic matter of the cap was completely replaced with metal as a part of the casting process (learn about that here), leaving behind a unique piece of nature permanently preserved in metal and stone.
